Tip tracking guide

How to track tips after every shift

A simple routine for recording cash tips, card tips, shared tips, hours and wages while the shift is still fresh.

Choose when to log

The best tip tracking routine is the one you will actually keep. Add a cash or card tip when it arrives if the amount is easy to capture. On a busy night, wait until closing and enter the whole shift at once. If details are missing, save what you know and finish the record later.

Record cash, card and shared tips separately

Keep cash and card tips in separate fields. Record tips received from coworkers and tips shared with the team as their own amounts. This makes the shift total explainable later and prevents a single net number from hiding where the money went.

Add worked hours and wages when known

Use worked time after unpaid breaks. For an overnight shift, keep the work date as the date the shift began. If your hours or wage are not known yet, leave them blank rather than estimating. You can add them after checking the schedule or payslip.

Separate earned from received

Cash taken home during the shift is already received. Card tips and wages may arrive through payroll later. Keep those categories separate so a later paycheck reduces the outstanding amount instead of adding the same earnings a second time.

For example, a shift can show $190 earned, $52 received during the shift and $138 expected through payroll. When payroll arrives, record the payment and any withholding against that outstanding amount.

Review the week and keep a backup

Review shifts against your schedule and payslip. Correct mistakes while the details are still familiar. Export a readable report when useful and keep a restorable backup before changing phones. Tiploom keeps unlimited shift records and manual JSON backup and restore available without a paid plan.
